The all-new, fourth generation Lexus RX makes its European debut at the Frankfurt motor show on 15 September, heralding the countdown to the first vehicles being delivered to customers early in the new year.
It is a significant model, given that RX is Lexus’s worldwide best-seller, accumulating around 2.2 million sales since the first version went on sale in 1998.
The new RX has a striking design, influenced by the NX crossover in its display of sharp creases and muscular curves. At the front there is a distinctive new rendition of the Lexus spindle grille and, on higher grade versions, new triple L-shaped LED headlights. The rear end is equally impactful with wrap-around light clusters and a back rear pillar finish that creates a floating roof effect.
Two powertrains will be available in the UK. The full hybrid RX 450h has been re-engineered for more refined and powerful performance, with output increased to 308bhp (230kW), enabling nought to 62mph acceleration in 7.7 seconds. Efficiency has been improved as well, with average fuel economy from around 54mpg and CO2 emissions from 120g/km.
The fourth generation RX will also adopt Lexus’s new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in the RX 200t.
The new RX fully embraces useful, innovative technologies in features such as a powered tailgate with a smart “no-touch” opening function, a colour head-up display, a 360-degree view monitor and a larger, 12.3-inch central display screen. On-board comfort has been improved with a more spacious interior, giving more room to rear seat passengers. Ride and handling have also been addressed, making the RX even more car-like to drive.
All versions of the new RX will be equipped as standard with Lexus Safety System+, providing Pre-Crash Safety, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist and Automatic High Beam. These features significantly improve the chances of avoiding a collision with better driver assistance, information and alerts.
UK model range and pricing
Entry point to the UK model range is the two-wheel drive RX 200t S, which comes as standard with Lexus Navigation, 18-inch alloys and bi-LED lights. The full hybrid RX 450h line-up, with all-wheel drive, starts with the SE model, equipped with electrically adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, nine-speaker audio system and Lexus Navigation.
Luxury trim adds the Lexus Premium Navigation system with 12.3-inch display, powered tailgate with “no-touch” sensor, 20-inch wheels and a wireless phone charger. F Sport puts the emphasis on sporty looks and handling with a dedicated exterior and interior styling package, adaptive variable suspension and low-speed cornering lights. Premier grade, available for the RX 450h, adds a new colour head-up display, 360-degree view monitor, semi-aniline leather upholstery, Mark Levinson audio system and an opening panoramic roof.
The RX 200t will be available on-the-road from £39,995; starting price for the RX 450h is £46,995. Detailed specifications and full pricing for the UK model range will be announced soon, with order books opening mid-September. First deliveries to customers will be in January.
