Lexus Creates and Artist Coco Sato Help People Learn Origami Skills in Lockdown

9 June 2020
  • Lexus provides a lockdown opportunity to learn the basic skills for traditional Japanese origami paper-folding
  • First instalment in the new Lexus Creates series presents video tutorials by UK-based origami artist Coco Sato

Lockdown restrictions may have brought traditional arts and crafts lessons to a halt, but Lexus is giving people the chance to learn the essential skills of Japanese origami paper-folding from a leading UK-based artist, without leaving home.

The first instalment in the new Lexus Creates series features Coco Sato, who demonstrates the techniques, precision and creativity of origami in three online how-to films. She helps viewers understand and apply origami techniques, starting with a simple cat before moving on to a leaf and a more complex butterfly design.

Sato’s video tutorials can be viewed on the Lexus UK blog, here

Lexus Creates is a social media-driven programme, aimed at encouraging people to enjoy and take part in creative activities. The global initiative is introducing subjects linked to the Lexus brand hallmarks of design and craftsmanship, through partnerships with talented artists and practitioners.

“Lexus often seeks new ways to connect with its audience, beyond the automotive realm,” said Brian Bolain, General Manager, Lexus International. “Our brand’s human-centric focus and dedication to craftsmanship provide a natural foundation from which to reach out and engage with people on topics that have already proved to be of interest to our audience. The Lexus Creates series is a perfect example.”

Born in Tokyo, Sato studied fine art at Central St Martins art and design college in London. She is known for her skills in translating traditional Japanese aesthetics into artforms with a modern edge, combining fabric, foodstuffs and simple electronics with paper in her artworks and public origami installations.

Her work is inspired by everyday life in her native Japan and her desire to dissolve boundaries and foster understanding between different cultures. It alludes to an increasingly fast-paced and stressed-out world and explores the relationship between human interaction, technology, space and nature, and is motivated by a belief in the power of individuals coming together to make a statement, create a movement or bring about positive change.

Sato shares her art and skills through social media and tutorials and encourages people to make things, “thinking with their hands.”
