New Small Lexus Unleashed
The waiting is nearly over. On 20 May the new Lexus IS200 will go on sale to the UK public promising contemporary looks, fun handling, fully loaded specification and ultra competitive prices.
Customer orders for the IS200 show how much interest has been generated in the car since it was first unveiled at the Geneva motor show in early March 1998.
To date, Lexus (GB) Ltd has received over 1,100 orders for the car, creating a two month waiting list already. The company is predicting it will sell 5,100 IS200s in the remainder of this year and 8,000 in a full year of sales.
The IS200 will go on sale in three trim levels, ‘S’, ‘SE’ and ‘Sport’ with all models offering standard climate control air-conditioning, twin front airbags and front seat side airbags, 6-disc single slot CD player, anti-lock brakes and traction control.
On the road prices for the three IS200 models start at £20,500 for the ‘S’, £22,000 for the ‘SE’ and £23,000 for the ‘Sport’. A four speed automatic transmission with cruise control is a £1,195 optional extra on the ‘S’ and ‘SE’ models.
Powered by a straight six cylinder 24 valve engine with VVT-i variable valve timing for optimum power, torque and fuel economy, the manual IS200 will accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.5 secs and record a top speed of 134mph. Combined fuel consumption is 29.1mpg.
