New ‘Lexus’ Enjoys Top Dog Status
An all-new Lexus is about to go into service. Available only in black, ‘upholstered’ in fur and with an advanced level of intelligence and four paw drive, ‘Lexus’ is one of the latest canine recruits to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
The young black labrador was given his distinctive name thanks to the involvement of one of Lexus (GB) Ltd’s Directors Mike Moran in a fund-raising initiative. Mike is the current captain of the Solus Golf Club, which supports the charity through an annual competition day.
By tradition, the club’s donation to the association is recognised by naming a new guide dog after the captain.
“We had a lot of fun at the club’s annual meeting trying to think of an appropriate name and it didn’t take long for us to settle on Lexus,” said Mike. “I’m sure the name will reflect his excellent performance and reliability.
“All of us at the club are delighted once again to be able to support the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in its marvellous work to help blind and partially sighted people enjoy greater independence and mobility.”
Like all the 4,800 and more guide dogs at work in the UK, Lexus began his training at six weeks old, before moving on to one of the association’s training centres. There he will develop the special skills needed to work in partnership with his prospective new owner. He will enjoy a working life of about seven years before retirement.
The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association has been established for 71 years and relies on voluntary contributions to fund its work. As well as breeding, training and maintaining guide dogs, it also makes substantial grants for research into blindness and other eye health issues and provides other practical help for blind and partially sighted people.
