Lexus will host an exhibition of world-class design at this year’s Milan Design Week, bringing together works by three world-renowned designers and the 12 winning entries from the second annual Lexus Design Award for young, international creative talent.
Lexus Design Amazing will demonstrate the brand’s enthusiasm for and support of futuristic design, beyond the automotive world. For the first time, it will be working with three internationally celebrated designers: Fabio Novembre, Nao Tamura and Hiroshi Ishii, leading the Tangible Media Group design team from the MIT Media Lab.
Each contributor will be creating a work specially developed for the show, inspired by Lexus’s global brand concept campaign Amazing in Motion. The exhibition will be open to the public at the Circolo Filologico in Milan from 8 to 13 April as part of the world’s largest design event, the Salone del Mobile di Milano.
About the designers
Fabio Novembre, born in Lecce, Italy, in 1966, studied architecture in Milan before undertaking a cinematography course at New York University. He opened his own studio in 1994 and has worked for a number of leading Italian design brands. His work has been published worldwide and he has been acclaimed for his visionary approach. Nao Tamura studied communication design at Parsons School of Design in New York, later founding her own studio in Tokyo. She is currently based in New York and has garnered a number of prestigious awards around the world for diverse projects including homewares and packaging. Her official website is at naotamura.com.
Hiroshi Ishii is a Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He founded and directs the Tangible Media Group and co-directs the Things That Think consortium. His research focuses on designing seamless interfaces between humans, digital information and the physical environment. More details can be found at tangible.media.mit.edu.
Lexus Design Award
The second annual Lexus Design Award has attracted more than 1,100 entries from around the world, almost one third of them from young designers based in Europe.
A panel of six experts is responsible for selecting the 12 finalists, from which two winners will progress to develop their proposals into physical prototypes, guided by eminent games designer Robin Hunicke and Taiwanese architect Arthur Huang.
The 12 finalists will be announced at the end of January. All will be invited to present the work they submitted at the Lexus Design Amazing exhibition.
