RX300 To ‘Come Down From Cambridge’ In 2003
The Lexus RX300, the luxury 4×4 to be launched in the UK this autumn, will be the first Lexus model built outside Japan when production starts at the company’s Canadian plant in 2003.
With annual production set to be around 60,000 units, the introduction of the RX300 at the company’s Cambridge, Ontario plant is expected to create about 300 new jobs* and lead to a total investment of U.S. $450 million.
This development reflects the company’s “to build where sold” philosophy and was encouraged, in part, by healthy 1999 sales of the RX300 in North America. With over 75,000 sold in the United States and Canada last year, the RX300 is the best selling Lexus model and has helped make Lexus the best selling luxury brand in the USA.
The European specification RX300, which will go on sale in the UK from October this year, will be built at the existing plant in Japan.
* The 250,000m2 plant, established in 1986, currently has 2,700 employees making Toyota models for the North American market.
